Vietnam Family Vacation: A 12-Day Itinerary with Culture, Beaches and Fun for Kids

Flying halfway around the world with children always raises questions: the long flight, the heat and humidity, and the worry that the kids will get bored. This 12-day itinerary from Viet Aurora Travel answers those concerns with moments children can take part in themselves: rowing through limestone caves, floating a paper lantern down the river in Hoi An, splashing in a water park on Phu Quoc and riding a sampan beneath the coconut palms of the Mekong. It is fun enough for the kids and meaningful enough for the grown-ups.

Why Vietnam Works So Well for Family Vacations

What worries most families is not whether to visit Vietnam, but whether a long trip will leave everyone exhausted. The answer lies in how the journey is paced: twelve days, with days for exploring and days for resting.

Culture Kids Can Touch

Children rarely remember a list of monuments, but they remember for a long time what they did with their own hands. On this journey, a child can sit in a boat rowed by a local, duck as it slips through a cave, float a lantern onto the river in Hoi An and taste a piece of coconut candy in a family workshop in Ben Tre. That is how a private 12-day family tour of Vietnam turns history and culture into things you can see, taste and talk about for years afterward.

A Pace Your Family Can Keep

The twelve days are divided into three regions, with three domestic flights and two completely free days, one in Hoi An and one on Phu Quoc. The first day has almost no program: someone meets you at Noi Bai Airport, takes you to your hotel, and your room is ready from 2 p.m. so the whole family can rest. Four days on the island are set aside for play and recovery after the busier days in the north. A private car and an English-speaking guide meet you at every stage, so parents do not have to wrestle with traffic or unfamiliar places while traveling with young children.

Văn hóa Việt Nam

Northern Vietnam with Kids: Hoa Lu, Tam Coc and Halong Bay

The north is the most surprising stretch of the trip, but also the one with the most time in the car. Knowing that in advance makes it easier to pace the whole family.

Day 2: A Rowboat Between Limestone Cliffs

From Hanoi, your car takes the family to Ninh Binh, with a rest stop along the way. The morning begins at Hoa Lu, the ancient capital, and then you step into a boat rowed by a local and glide along the Ngo Dong River between limestone hills, rice fields and quiet villages. The boat passes through caves, and for children this is often the best part: duck your head, hold your breath, then cheer as the boat slides back into the light. After lunch, anyone with energy to spare can climb Ngoa Long Mountain at Mua Cave for a sweeping view of the valley of rice fields. The climb suits older children; if yours are younger, ask our advisors about resting at the base of the mountain instead.

Day 3: A Day on Halong Bay

The next morning, you leave Hanoi’s Old Quarter by expressway for Tuan Chau Harbor, board a cruise boat and spend roughly five to six hours on the bay. Lunch is served on board as the limestone islands drift by. You stop at Surprise Cave, where stalactites and stalagmites take the shapes of sea creatures, and then at Titop Island, with its small sandy beach beneath the cliffs. You can climb to the top for a panoramic view of the bay, or stay on the sand if the children would rather play in the water; swimming depends on the season. In the afternoon, the family kayaks or rides a bamboo boat into Luon Cave to reach a quiet lagoon. On the way back, there is a sunset party on the upper deck with tea, cakes and music.

Tips for Two Long Days in the North

These two days involve a lot of time on the road, so bring snacks, water, hats and sunscreen, along with swimsuits, sunglasses and insect repellent. Let the children nap in the car whenever they need to. The schedule on the bay can change with the weather, so avoid adding any other plans at the end of the day.

Ha Long Bay

Hoi An: An Ancient Town the Whole Family Can Enjoy

After the north, the pace slows down in Hoi An. It is a place where children can look, touch and try things, and adults finally have time to sit down.

Day 4: The Old Town Through a Child’s Eyes

Day 4 begins with a flight from Hanoi to Da Nang, followed by the transfer to Hoi An. Your guide leads you through the bustling market, full of color, sound and smell, then to Phuc Kien Assembly Hall, with its dragon statues and family altar, where children can watch local worshippers make offerings. You pass old merchant houses that have stood for more than 200 years, visit the Museum of Folk Culture in a merchant house over 150 years old, and stand on the Japanese Bridge, which is more than 400 years old and spans a small waterway. Turn it into a game: find the dragon, count the pillars, guess what smell is drifting from the market. In the evening, the family boards a boat to release lanterns, makes a wish and watches the little light drift away through the lantern-lit town.

Day 5: A Free Day

The next day belongs entirely to your family. You can walk or cycle through the streets, linger over a drink by the river, or stop at the Reaching Out Teahouse, an old-fashioned teahouse that provides jobs for people who are hard of hearing and serves tea samplers and homemade snacks. Hoi An is also famous for its tailors, who can make clothes you collect within 24 hours; if you would like something made for your children, tell us in advance so we can arrange it.

Hoi An

Phu Quoc and the Mekong: Play, Rest and a Day on the River

The second half of the trip shifts from culture to relaxation, then ends with a quiet day on the river.

Phu Quoc: Cable Cars, Water Parks and Beaches

On Day 6, you fly from Da Nang to Phu Quoc and rest for the remainder of the day. On Day 7, the family rides the Hon Thom Cable Car, one of the longest sea-crossing cable cars in the world, looking down on the blue water from above, then plays at Aquatopia Water Park, with more than twenty water attractions. In the late afternoon, you head to Sunset Town, where colorful buildings inspired by Italy’s Amalfi Coast line the shore, walk out to the Kiss Bridge for sunset, and catch the evening shows. Day 8 is free: you can head to Starfish Beach, or take the free shuttle bus to Grand World, which has a Teddy Bear Museum, gondola rides, a night market and water shows.

The Island Day: Pearls, Coral and Little Islands

On Day 9, a boat takes you to a pearl farm, then to Hon Gam Ghi for snorkeling over the coral reefs and Hon May Rut Trong for swimming and photos, with the option of stand-up paddleboarding or drone photography. The buffet lunch is a chance for everyone to rest before heading back. Water activities depend on each child’s age and swimming ability, so talk to your guide about choosing the right level for your family.

Day 11: A Day on the Mekong River

After the flight to Ho Chi Minh City, Day 11 is a gentle finale. You drive to My Tho, visit Vinh Trang Pagoda and board a boat on the Tien River, passing islets, stilt houses, fishing villages and fruit orchards. Lunch is served in an orchard on one of the islands. In the afternoon, you ride a sampan along a narrow canal shaded by water coconut palms in Ben Tre, taste coconut candy in a family workshop, enjoy fresh fruit, sip honey tea and listen to southern Vietnamese folk music performed by locals. It is a soft, slow and down-to-earth ending for the whole family.
